Tattoos are probably as old as the human race with archaelogical evidence from Ancient Egypt discovering mummies with traces of tattoo pigments over 3000 years old.

Today tattoos have never been more popular, figures suggest that in 2000 as many as 39 million Americans had a tattoo -- a doubling of the proportion of the population that had them half a century earlier.
